We’ve all heard the saying
Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me
But we all know that this is not true, words can hurt and they do.
Bullying is no longer something that is saved for the junior high playground, it happens everyday, everywhere, regardless of your age.
My 5 year old has been getting bullied recently by someone in her class, they tease her, taunt her and when they walk past occasionally shove her, and it is NOT OKAY.
I have talked to the teacher, and we will see how well that works. I know she really cares about my daughter so hopefully we can nip it in the bud.
My question is
WHY?
Why does she pick on my sweet angel? She doesn’t wear dirty clothes, or smell, she is kind and helpful. What happened to this little child that makes them think this behavior is acceptable? The saddest part is that the parents probably exhibit this behavior as an example.
What is even more pathetic to me is when adults do this. What makes some people think they are the authority to judge others? Why do we all need to live by this person’s standard of what is acceptable?
The most wonderful part of blogging is that you can say what you want, when you want about what you want, yes there is a line, you shouldn’t be a bigot in anyway, but you also shouldn’t criticize people’s parenting, writing style or outfit choices.
Aren’t we too old for that?
Don’t be a bystander! If you see this behavior STOP it and teach your children to stop it. No one deserves to be a victim of bullying, no matter how old they are.
Bullying is also not something that is reserved for face to face interactions, cyber bullying is running wild today. Cyber bullying can happen from any corner of the world and can reach anyone with a simple Internet connection and it is unacceptable. My friend Lisette wrote an awesome post about mean anonymous comments that should definitely be read, by all bloggers.
If you see bullying of any sort, don’t just walk away, stand up and help, if you don’t it will only get worse.

Thanks for the mention. And kudos to your daughter for talking to you about it. I was bullied in almost every stage of school in one way or another. But I never really went to my parents about it. I always wanted to take care of things on my own. You're right. That type of behavior is probably encouraged at home, whether or not the parents even realize it.

so sad for your little babe. i have a TON of bully stories. things i didn't tell my mom about until like last year because it was so humiliating. i'm sorry she has to deal with such mean people at such a young age. but i'm glad you're aware of it now and that you're teaching her how to stand up for herself.

Thanks so much for writing about this! Bullying really is a huge problem and something really needs to happen. I think teaching kids to stand up and do something rather than be a bystander is so important. Your little one is so cute and sounds like such a sweetheart. I cant imagine why anybody would say or do anything unkind to her. I really hope it stops soon. Keep me updated!

So sorry to hear about your little one, no child should endure this. My little girl started preschool a few months back and I just hope she fits any and doesn't get bullied. I remember not fitting in as a kid and it was awful and lonely. Yet it made me stronger in the end and now I stand way too much for myself :-). And I also believe parents play a big role in it, i always tell my girl to be nice to someone and not hurt or say bad things about them.

This just breaks my heart! And at 5 years old?!?! I'm so scared of the possibility that my kids (boys-8&6, girl-2) could get bullied. You're right, words DO hurt, sometimes more than sticks and stones. This is what I tell my kids all the time, it's sad to know not everyone lives by this. š

Bullying is ridiculous! I can't believe that it has escalated far beyond what it was when we were in school. I am so sorry for your little one Myranda!

Thanks for writing on a difficult topic! I hope things get worked out for your daughter. As a teacher myself, bullying always scares me. It's hard to catch happening because kids do it when adults aren't around. It's also hard to punish because you're having to get stories from kids of what happened and usually the stories don't add up. It's a TOUGH situation all around. I think it comes down to being taught at home what's right and what's wrong and how to treat others with kindness.
